COGERSA Gijon, Asturie – Spagna

TMB biostabilisation Plant

THANKS TO THE MECHANICAL BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT SYSTEM BEE BY ENTSORGA, ASTURIAS IS FULLY ENTERING THE ERA OF ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION. THE PLANT’S OBJECTIVE IS TO PROCESS MIXED SOLID WASTE TO MAKE IT SUITABLE FOR LANDFILL DISPOSAL. THIS IS A HIGHLY ENVIRONMENTALLY COMPATIBLE SOLUTION THAT ENSURES A REDUCTION IN GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND LEACHATE.

COMPANY

The government of Asturias and 78 municipal councils created the public consortium COGERSA to develop integrated solutions for municipal waste disposal. The objective of the new structure is to recycle the mixed fraction, thus to make the most of it instead of sending it directly to landfill.

PROJECT

The overall contract for the work was awarded in 2022 by the Consortium to the Galician company Setec Buildings (Valtalia), which chose Entsorga for the engineering of the biostabilisation section, a large line that will process 160,000 tonnes of waste per year.

SOLUTION

The system designed is a Bee, complete with two Spider automatic overhead cranes to handle the waste. This is Entsorga’s most advanced biostabilisation technology, incorporating the most up-to-date control and automation systems, ensuring the plant operates in line with Industry 4.0 standards.

Also state-of-the-art is the ventilation and extraction system (2), equipped with 34 fans, which completely eliminates any emissions, sending the process air to the biofiltration system.

PROCESS

The municipal solid waste (MSW) undergoes a biological biostabilisation treatment process lasting approximately 21 days in which, thanks to forced aeration, the natural degradation of the organic part is accelerated and the material is dried, losing most of the moisture it contains. The process is managed automatically by a control system, which processes the data and optimises the air flow supplied to the biomass being treated. The process air is conveyed to a biofilter to purify it of bad odours.
