LOOKING AHEAD

CONSTANT INNOVATION IN PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES, THE CREATING PROTYPES, EXPERIMENTING WITH NEW METHODS OF WASTE TREATMENT AND RECOVERY. IN ORDER TO LIMIT THE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT, ENTSORGA IS ALWAYS COMMITTED TO RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT, INCLUDING THE PARTICIPATION IN PROJECTS, BOTH NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL, SHARING EXPERIENCES AND CO-OPERATING WITH A NETWORK OF IMPORTANT AND QUALIFIED PARTNERS SO AS TO REMAIN ON THE FRONT LINE IN THE CREATION OF AVANT-GUARD TECHNOLOGIES.

The Saturno projects

progetto saturno entsorga

Today one of the most ambitious challenges on a world wide scale to make our cities and industrial processes more eco sustainable regards the search for innovative methods for the collection of urban waste, transforming it into useful compost and raw materials for agriculture and industry.

To this end , in July 2019 project Saturno began, this is an accronym for Organic waste and Carbon Anhydride transformed into Fuel, fertilizer and chemical products; the concrete application of the ecoNOmia circular. The project comprises 26 partners including Universities, Research Centres and compagnies, Entsorga is one of these.

Our contribution to this project regards in particolar the construction of an optical separator protype NIR of latest generation for the selection of plastics from organic waste, in this way taking full advantage of the maximum possibility of recovery and recycling. This instrument, which is in the final phase of completion, will be put into place by the summer of 2020 in two partner companies to carry out the same number of tests, each of the duration of 6 weeks; in ACEA it will operate directly on plastic waste from pretreatment from FORSU, in GAIA on the plastics that have been separated after the composting process.

The fraction of non biodegradable plastics that won’t be separated or treated will be used in a conversion plant in CSS (Secondary Solid Fuels) situated in Territorio e Risorse Srl  (a company once owned by Entsorga and now owned by Iren) – in Santhià (VC).  The aim of the tests, as well as the characterization of the type of plastic (PET,PE etc.), will also be to create a database to evaluate the level of refinement necessary to improve to the fullest the quality of the alternative fuel for cement manufacturing, eliminating PVC which has a high chlorine content.

The insect farming sector is now considered one of the most interesting and promising sectors to address the growing demand for protein sources and offer an alternative and sustainable solution in animal nutrition.

BEF Biosystems, an innovative start-up operating in the field of sustainable insect farming founded in Turin in 2016, has developed an innovative project that has led to the realization of a proprietary technology for the breeding of the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens), the most widely used species in the world today in the production of insect-based meals. In May 2021, the company started the first “Bugsfarm” pilot plant in Casalnoceto (AL), thus being able to successfully field test the process system and technology. The system is based on small-scale modular plants that use organic waste and residues recovered from the area as a nutritional substrate for Soldier fly larvae, which, once grown, can be used as an alternative protein source directly in the poultry sector or, processed into flours and fats, in different feed sectors (petfood, aquaculture, pig farming). The planned use of renewable or recovered energy sources makes the system as a whole a model of circular economy and environmental sustainability, which also contributes to a positive boost to the economic and social development of the area.

In 2022, EntsorgaFin entered the share capital of BEF, and at the same time Entsorga Italia SpA signed a supply agreement for the industrial production of the machinery developed by BEF Biosystems.

For the start-up, the scale-up phase has thus begun, with the consolidation of the organizational structure for corporate development and the construction of the first plants. The development plan calls for the start-up of the first 10 farms by 2023 and the construction of another 100 in Italy and abroad in the following years.
