THE PLANT TREATS ORGANIC KITCHEN WASTE BY INTEGRATING ANAEROBIC DIGESTION WITH COMPOSTING TO PRODUCE BIOGAS, THEN BIOMETHANE, AND QUALITY COMPOST.
RECENTLY AUTHORIZED TO DOUBLE ITS CAPACITY, IT REPRESENTS THE STATE OF THE ART OF ENTSORGA PROPRIETARY TECHNOLOGIES IN THE FIELD OF WASTE RECOVERY.
THE PLAYER
Territorio e Risorse S.r.l., 100% controlled by IREN Group, is the owner Company of the Santhià (VC) composting plant.
It was part of the Entsorga Group in the last 10 years and recently has been subject to extraordinary operation and agreements between Entsorga and IREN Groups.
THE PROJECT
The company Territorio e Risorse S.r.l. was founded in 2009 to build the Santhià plant and produce compost from organic kitchen waste.
The company is permitted to double the treatment capacity, with an Anaerobic Digestion unit that will be added to the composting section.
In 2018, also the permit for Advanced Biomethane production was obtained.
THE ENTSORGA’S SOLUTION
The plant has been designed in order to serve the north Piedmont area and in particular the Vercelli Province.
The plant has been designed to achieve the following targets:
- environmental compatibility: all the operations are in enclosed and airproof building kept in negative pressure. Neither odours nor dust are released.
- management and labour costs reduction by enforcing a full automation thus making it possible to manage the plant. The automation is also beneficial in regards with health and safety matters by preventing the operator to access the areas where the rotting masses are.
- low energy consumption by preferring low consumption equipments and energy recovery devices where possible (cranes).
SANTHIÀ PLANT EXPANSION PROJECT WITH ANAEROBIC DIGESTION
In February 2016 Entsorga has obtained the authority to build and operate the Santhià composting plant expansion project with anaerobic digestion.
Anaerobic Digestion goes alongside composting as its natural complement.
The two processes are organized in sets: in the first phase the organic fraction undergoes a hot biological degradation and in absence of oxygen, which produces biogas (mainly methane) and an intermediate solid product, the digestate.
In the second phase the digestate turns into compost, completing the waste recovery cycle.
The area occupied by the Anaerobic Digestion section will be approximately 5.000 m2.
Plant’s Layout and Technology – based on a long-lasting and international experience by Zenviro Tech, leader company in anaerobic digestor development – and further developed for Santhià project by Entsorga and Zenviro Tech partnership.
The addition of the anaerobic section increases the plant’s level of circularity, adding further strengths::
- energy self-sufficiency
- high Automation
- overall equipment optimization
